Rock of My Ages
This is the song that started this whole process. Back in 2018 I was frantically scratching my head trying to figure out what to get my wife Theresa for our 40th wedding anniversary. I was coming up empty but I knew that I would need to find something to mark this significant event in our lives. I then remembered that I had written a song a few years back that would fit the occasion. I had made a rough home recording of the song but didn’t think that would be suitable.
I contacted my old high school friend JK Gulley to see if he would make a professional recording of the song so that I could present it to Theresa on our anniversary. JK and I have been friends since we met in grade 8 way back in 1967. During our high school years JK and I wrote songs together. Although I had figured JK would just record the song with his instrumentation and vocals, he convinced me to do my own vocals to make it a bit more personal. I was a bit hesitant but I figured 40 years only comes around once, so what could it hurt. So that's how this whole thing started. The recording was a success and my wife loved it.
Although it's a very personal song, I think that it expresses a common sentiment for couples who have been together for a long time. I like to call it "The Anniversary Song" and maybe other folks will agree.
